Set in a future where the world after nuclear war destroyed and the United States be divided into several new areas. In an area called Panem, we are introduced to an annual extreme game that became the title of this film, The Hunger Games. Twenty-four young teens, each consisting of twelve men and twelve women, selected at random where they represent the twelve districts of Panem is released into the wild until only one person survived. The winner will receive a prize of honor, fame, and supply food for the family. Plot somewhat reminds me of Battle Royale, the film made in 2000 from Japan, adapted from the same titled novel, which tells the number of troubled students were sent to a remote island to kill each other and the winner is the last student to survive. Underlying the emergence of both games is the same, moral degradation. If traced further, the teenagers are just a bunch of ordinary teenagers made a scapegoat for mistakes made by the authorities. Completely squeezed by unfavorable circumstances, the small peoples is also obedient to the games designed by the despotic rulers.
The main character of The Hunger Games is a two-Tribute - the name for the selected participants - from the poorest districts in Panem, District 12, Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson). There are unique here. Unlike the movie adaptation of young adult novels mostly, Katniss is described as a weak girl who is always whining to ask for protection. Independent, strong physically and mentally, as well as adept at using a bow and arrow, Katniss even seem more masculine than Peeta. Suzanne Collins, the novelist who is also acting as a screenwriter, as the patron for placing Katniss Peeta. Jennifer Lawrence plays his role very well and convincingly. No wonder, many have Katniss little resemblance to the character of Ree Dolly in Winter's Bone. Josh Hutcherson's acting has improved here. Lawrence clashing acting together, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Stanley Tucci and Donald Sutherland Hutcherson apparently sparked enthusiasm to exert their best ability.
Juxtaposed with Battle Royale, The Hunger Games was more inhumane due to fighting between the Tribute of the twelve districts is presented live via a reality show. There are similarities here with The Condemned. But again, still more moral than what is done by Seneca Crane (Wes Bentley), for The Hunger Games. Twenty-four innocent teens forced to fight to the death for the sake of satisfying the desire of the uncivilized. Impress the barbarians when I discovered that participants who followed the event is youth aged 12 to 18 years with a system of random selection. So this fight is not too healthy for power among the participants by other participants are not comparable. But of course, Seneca, and the rulers in the Capitol city does not care, this advance will make the show more interesting to observe. To survive in the Arena - where the battle - the attribute is also need sponsors who will supply their needs during the match. How, by show of skill before entering the Arena. Impressive ability to make Katniss then became a byword. Where to borrow a phrase from the American Idol fans, it is Katniss 'frontrunner' while Peeta is 'cannon fodder'.
